Antenatal Sickle cell and Thalassaemia screening programme Investigation of anaemia in selected cases

Comments/Precautions

May be sent away for confirmatory test, if Hb capillary electrophoresis test is abnormal All samples of babies and infants ( <1 year old) are sent away Sample needs to accompany with an additional FBC request

Non-antenatal, non-infant samples : same day results for capillary Hb electrophoresis if sample arrives haematology laboratory by 3pm; otherwise, next working day. Antenatal Sickle Cell and thalassaemia screening: 3 days Please contact haematology laboratory if urgent results required: Sickle solubility test results for urgent detection of HbS may be available in an hour.
